This week I came across another nugget of information that forced me into the only conclusion I can…. The iPhone sellers, here in Australia, the Mobile Phone service providers and their resellers, know nothing about these phones and I guess nothing about the others brands either.
They are just resellers and then when you have issues they just shove you on.
In one of the examples I have is where they kept the phone and diagnosed the problem incorrectly and made an insurance claim. The owner had no idea at this stage the job was passed directly to the insurance company (possible assuming that insurance would then go to Apple to get another??).. he was then hit with an excess fee from the insurance company. After that shock, he made an inquiry with Apple, they said the problem, with actually seeing it was most likely a manufacturing issue and had he have taken it to the Apple store it would have been swapped there and then. The problem? A distorted and cracked back of the phone (clearly no impact marks present) Diagnosis… a swollen battery as the liquid from inside had seeped out. The shop said a water bath via the docking port caused the damage to the battery. I will stand corrected, but acid corrosion is a different colour to other, say, salt water corrosion… No one at the store cared enough to push it further. The excess was included on the phone bill for the next month so he had to pay it or be in arrears for the phone bill itself.
Another story from a friend is that of a cracked screen iPhone, and the return to the phone shop for repair. A series of back and forth communications before they decided couldn’t be repaired. When really it needed to go to Apple for the immediate decision, no repair possible and an insurance claim could be made. Then add to that the shop forgetting for weeks to send it back. Even during that period, telling the customer they were waiting for it to be returned..then one day someone actually checked the paperwork to find it hand been sent.
So remember if the chance arises, take it to Apple first. And make a big noise if you can’t get it to them, the diagnosis may well be a whole lot different.
